So … last month, I ordered a latch hook rug kit from eBay – a 1977-era rug kit from Bernat.
The kit contained one canvas and some vintage mimeographed instructions.
The rug colors requiredf or this project were not available; I had to source other yarns for the project.
The rug yarns were sold in skeins; I had to purchase a tool and hand-cut 2 1/2″ strands – thousands of them – for this project. That’s what happens when you order a kit from eBay and find out that there’s a fine print message on the package that says “YARN SOLD SEPARATELY.”
So all I really received was this canvas.

So I spent the better part of a month and a half hand-cutting yarn and hand-hooking yarn into the canvas. Cut, cut, cut. Hook, hook, hook.
And on Sunday night … I finally finished the project.

There we go. A nice, bright, fluorescent canvas. This should be just good enough for Competition Season.
Uh-oh. I said “just good enough.”
I cannot settle for “just good enough.” That’s not how I operate.
I looked at the package photo. This rug has tassels and fringe hanging from the canvas bottom.
Okay, let’s check the directions, maybe I can …
Wait, where are the directions?
Where did I put the directions.?
Hello, directions, where ARE you?!?
Aw, nuts. In my effort to clean up around the house, I must have pitched the directions away. You know this feeling as well as I; the moment when you make the boxed dinner, you toss the box in the trash, then you fish into the trash to find the box because you forgot how long to back the food or what temperature the oven needs.
No matter. I’ll figure something out.
I cut several 22-inch strands of yarn, then latch-hooked them into the rug canvas. And after tying some of them together into tassels …
I produced this.

Now this totally rocks.
All I need now is to take this to a frame shop, have the framers wrap the canvas around a wooden frame, add a wire for the back, and this little treasure is SO READY for Competition Season 2026.
Which means I can enter this one in two competitions, while saving my latch hooked covered bridge rug – you know, this one –

… for other Competition Season 2026 shows.
Yeah, I’m in Competition Season mode right now.
What, you couldn’t tell? ;D
